The Ruby Reel (K-Music Recs) :: Record #1

Written By: Lauren

Hello, everyone! It’s Ren here with my first music recommendation list. I’ll be compiling playlists of Korean music (especially K-pop, K-R&B, and K-Hip Hop) that I think you should all listen to!

For this Record, I’ll be focusing on some recent releases (within the past few weeks). These are in no particular order. Enjoy!

Track # 1: “Young Forever” by BTS

Album: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Epilogue

Duration: 3:16

Commentary: The song is beautiful in so many ways. It’s a touching song with strong, emotional vocals and raps and is also Rap Monster’s debut as a composer. Even if you aren’t a BTS fan, you can relate to the meaning of the song and experience the same feelings that fans have when they listen to it. They discuss the feelings that run through their head when they realize that they can only be young for so long and the unexpected destinies that lie ahead of them in the unknown future.

Track # 2: “Attention” by UP10TION

Album: Spotlight

Duration: 3:16

Commentary: If you’re a fan of UP10TION’s previous tracks, then you’ll love this one for sure. “Attention” is a fun, upbeat, and catchy track with great vocals and rap segments. My favorite part of the track is Bitto and Wei’s back-to-back rap, followed by the energizing ending led by Kuhn. UP10TION really sets the bar high in spite of being a rookie group, and this song has cemented a individual music style for them. Give this track a listen. It’s guaranteed to get you dancing!

Track # 3: “Queen” by HISTORY

Album: HIM

Duration: 3:20

Commentary: “Queen” is a dance track with a unique blend of vocal tones and raps. It’s a really dynamic song that makes you want to dance along while you listen to it. At first, I was thrown off by the unusual chorus, but it really enhances the overall effect of the song! What was most notable to me was the sheer energy of the song and how much it continues to grow on me each time I listen to it. Check it out below!

Track # 3: “Dynamite” by VIXX

Album: Zelos

Duration: 3:30

Commentary: At first, it didn’t stick out to me as much compared to VIXX’s previous releases. However, the more you listen to it, the more you think about the unique elements that come into the song and the interesting vocal tones. All of VIXX have very distinct voices and they all come together to make a upbeat, funky song that’s easy on the ears and reminiscent of older styles of music.

Track # 4: “Toy” by BLOCK B

Album: Blooming Period

Duration: 3:26

Commentary: “Toy” is a spectacular song, with a softer rap and vocal opening and gradual buildup to a more upbeat chorus. The transitions between each segment of the song are smooth and gives the song a great fluidity. Although it’s a slower, more emotional song compared to “Her” and previous releases, it doesn’t lack when it comes to vocal variety, energy, and amazing rap segments. Give “Toy” your love!

Track # 5: “The 7th Sense” by NCT U

Album: The 7th Sense

Duration: 3:34

Commentary: On first listen, I didn’t like the song much because I found it bland. However, it grew on me a lot within the past few weeks and is now one of my most-played in my “Recent Songs” playlist. NCT U explores trap music with this song and showcases interesting vocals and rap through this song. The chorus is repetitive but catchy and gets stuck in my head. I’m in love with Dohyun and Jaehyun’s voices and Mark’s rap, which also contains English in it. If you’re a fan of trap and trippy music, this is the song for you!
