The Ruby Reel (J-Music Recs) :: Record #1

Written By: Weslee

Welcome to the first official post of Weslee’s J-Music Recommendation! These are purely based on my personal opinion, so you may or may not agree with them, but please be polite in the comments. These posts will be a compilation of my top 5 picks from anything that’s caught my eye, along with them are the song information, links, and music videos! J-Music is not only limited to J-Pop, so there will be a variety of genres within the Japanese music spectrum. Please enjoy Weslee’s Top Five!

Title: Amakakeru Hoshi (天かける星)

Artist: Suara (すあら)

Album:  Amakakeru Hoshi (天かける星)

Media (Anime OP): Utawarerumono Itsuwari no Kamen OP2 (うたわれるもの 偽りの仮面)

Official Website: Suara

Thoughts: Suara’s voice alone is enough to make my thoughts transport to another world; the flute notes in this song really do accentuate her voice quite well, the overall composition making me feel ready for a battle! The part with the string instruments was whimsical and created a calmer feature compared to the chorus which focused strongly on the drums. If you are looking for a song to pump you up for battle (of any sorts), I recommend this one.

Title: Change (チェンジ )

Artist(s): Monkey Majik and Yoshida Brothers (吉田兄弟)

Album: MONKEY MAJIK~10Years&Forever~

Media: N/A

Official Site: Yoshida Brothers and Monkey Majik

Thoughts:  Monkey Majik is a classic band for me; I have been listening to their songs since their debut in 2010! Combine that with the amazing musical addition from the Yoshida Brothers and we have a match made in heaven. The traditional Japanese instruments melded nicely with the modern rock Monkey Majik plays that we are all accustomed to.

Title: Asu e no Tegami (明日への手紙)

Artist: Aoi Teshima (手嶌葵)

Album (Single): Asu e no Tegami (明日への手紙)

Media (Drama): Itsuka kono Koi wo Omoidashite Kitto Naite shimau (いつかこの恋を思い出してきっと泣いてしまう)

Official Site: Aoi Teshima

Thoughts: The song itself is extremely soothing, Teshima’s voice light and airy, making for the entire song to be light-hearted and calming. I found this song not too long ago, and fell in love with Teshima’s voice, this song especially making me feeling somewhat melancholic. Listening to this on the ride home after a long day of school/work and watching the sun set is a good choice for relaxation.

Title: Watch Out

Artist: Da-iCE (ダイス)

Album (Single): Watch Out

Media: N/A

Official Site: Da-iCE

Thoughts: Upbeat, a bit on the funky side, it’s the type of J-pop that’s bound to make you get up and want to dance along. I actually don’t listen to many Japanese boy-bands for some reason– it’s not on purpose, but I should definitely change that. The energy from the beat is uplifting and gets my feet moving, it’s a fun and ready-to-party tune!

Title: The Way Back

Album: 35xxxv

Media: N/A

Official Site: ONE OK ROCK

Thoughts: I absolutely love ONE OK ROCK and Taka’s voice, frankly they might be in my top 5 favorite bands of all time. This song is no exception, Taka’s singing in Japanese and English really make it for me, his voice exceedingly amazing. The parts where the beat kicks up always hypes me up thanks to Taka’s voice, and overall the song is great, and so is the album. I’m a major fan of J-rock and if ever asked for a recommendation for this certain genre, I always say ONE OK ROCK first.
